Swimbridge (historical spelling : Swymbridge) is a village in the English county of Devon. Situated 4 miles south-east of Barnstaple and twinned with the town of St. Honorine Du Fay in Normandy, France.
Swimbridge was the home of the Rev. John “Jack” Russell who developed the Jack Russell terrier.
The village is noted for its church The Church of St. James, which has been described as a “treasure house” due to it’s fine carvings and memorials. A church has been located on the present site for over 1000 years. The presence of a chapel here was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086). In the 11th century the church was granted a charter giving it a right for people to be buried in the churchyard.
